Sustainability

We’ve spent our lives on boats and feel deeply connected to the water. Because of this we do everything we can to safeguard our rivers and oceans, and the diversity of species that live in them. We take it as our mission to operate in a truly sustainable manner and to educate others about how they can do so as well.

Local, Seasonal, Organic and Sustainable

We started our restaurant with a dedication to sustainability on all fronts, including sourcing local, seasonal and organic ingredients wherever possible. Over time Crew has become a leading voice in the sustainable seafood movement. With efforts led by culinary director Kerry Heffernan, Crew actively engages in advocacy, fundraising, and sustainable sourcing. We build our menu around sustainable seafood species from under-utilized, wild-caught fish to oysters raised by ecologically-minded growers. On top of this, we have led an industry-wide campaign against serving striped bass and other at risk species. As partners of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch, the  Nature Conservancy and The Billion Oyster Project, we focus both on building awareness and raising funds to preserve our waterways and the life they support.

Zero Waste

Grand Banks is committed to zero waste operations. While we have not quite achieved perfection, we are constantly working to improve our processes. Below are our key areas of focus.

No Plastics

We make every effort to completely remove disposable plastics from all aspects of our business. We have eliminated plastic straws at the bar and made clear to our vendors that we do not accept items wrapped in plastic.

No Paper

We have gone digital, eliminating paper receipts and the unhealthy chemicals in printer ink. We’ve replaced paper towels with hand dryers and  use biodegradable toilet paper.

No Cans

We no longer sell beer in cans. We serve draft beer only. It is fresher, tastes better and is better for the environment.

Less Glass

We have eliminated the majority of our disposable glass bottles, save for liquors, and a few wines by the bottle. After use, all bottles are recycled.

Compostable Products

We have committed to purchasing compostables for all of our disposable products, from fry cups to straws.

Oyster Shell Recycling

We save all of our oyster shells and donate them to the Billion Oyster Project to use in the creation of new oyster reefs in New York Harbor.

Cardboard Recycling

While we still receive a fairly large amount of cardboard with our deliveries, we recycle 100% of our cardboard waste.

Cooking Oil

We save all of our cooking oil for conversion into biodiesel.

Ecological Cleaning Supplies

Our cleaning supplies are plant-based and chemical free.
